Biography

Matt Grzelcyk was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the 3rd round #85 overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Grzelcyk played with the US National Development Team for two seasons from 2010-2012 (with Bruin forward Frank Vatrano) before playing at Boston University for four seasons from 2012-2016 (with Bruins prospects Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson and Charlie McAvoy). He was named to the Hockey East All-Freshman team in 2012 and named captain for BU in both his junior and senior seasons. He was also named the assistant captain of the 2014 World Juniors US Team. In 2015 he scored the overtime tournament-winner in the Beanpot Tournament and was named the tournament MVP. At the conclusion of his senior season at BU he signed a two-year Entry Level contract with Boston and began his first pro season with Providence in 2016-17. He made his pro debut for the P-Bruins on October 14 vs Albany, registering his first assist October 16 against St. John’s and first goal against Utica October 28. He earned his first NHL recall on December 14, 2016 and made his debut that night for Boston on the road in Pittsburgh. Recalled on emergency basis prior to game three of Boston’s first round, 2017 Stanley Cup Playoff match-up, but returned the following day after sitting out the game.
